Additionally, the recall includes 2009-2010 Elantra Touring vehicles that were manufactured between November 1, 2008 and April 30, 2010.
There may be a sensing discrepancy in the electronic power steering (EPS) electronic control unit (ECU). This can cause the vehicle to disable the power steering assist unexpectedly.
Hyundai will verify proper EPS operation and will replace defective units to correct the problem.
Tie Rod Assembly

The tie rod assembly is attached to the steering gearbox, allowing the driver to use the steering wheel to control the direction of travel of the vehicle’s front wheels. Each wheel has one tie rod, and its malfunction can put the driver and vehicle at risk of harm.
If the linkage inside the tie rod assembly breaks, the driver will lose control of the ability to steer that particular wheel. Even at slow speeds, this could raise the risk of a crash. An internal crack in some ball joint assemblies on Hyundai Elantras built before 2005 may cause this breakage.
Steering gearbox assemblies on the affected vehicles will be replaced to correct the problem.
Loss of Electric Power Steering Assist

Power steering assist is very important for safe handling and control of a vehicle. Especially at slow speeds, having power steering makes it easier to maneuver a vehicle around corners, through parking lots, and more.
In some 2017 Hyundai Elantra vehicles, a damaged Electronic Power Steering (EPS) connector could cause a loss of electric power to the steering assist system. This could increase the risk of a crash due to the extra effort required to steer the vehicle.
Additionally, the unexpected loss of steering assistance could further raise the crash risk, since the driver would be unprepared for the extra effort required to pilot the vehicle.
Dealers will replace the EPS motor to correct the problem and eliminate the risk.
