Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT-8 from front - Vehicle History

Sporty, top performance and some off-roading fun make the Jeep Grand Cherokee an attractive vehicle. For most people, you also need to take into consideration the safety rating for this SUV. Is it the safest option for your family to use for work or play?

How safe is the Jeep Grand Cherokee?

The 2020 Jeep Grand Cherokee received a 5-Star Overall Safety Rating from NHTSA and mixed ratings in creditworthiness by IIHS. Combine this with a 4.8-Star Owner Rating and 4.3/10 Star Expert Review rating for a strong performer in safety on the road.

These ratings can be somewhat misleading and don’t provide a lot of detail. That’s why we’ll break down the test results and reveal which safety features the Jeep Grand Cherokee has on board to make this a safe (or maybe not so much) vehicle.

2020 Jeep Grand Cherokee Crash Test Rating

Crash test ratings come from organizations assessing vehicles for overall safety. These tests give insight into what happens when a collision does occur to the car and those within it. Here’s how these tests broke down for the 2020 Jeep Grand Cherokee.

Insurance Institute for Highway Safety Test Results

The IIHS had some key concerns with the safety of the 2020 Jeep Grand Cherokee. In Crashworthiness testing, it gave the driver-side small overlap front test a “Marginal” rating and the passenger-side ranging a “Poor” rating. All other areas, such as roof, side, and seats, got a “Good” rating.

Also notable are the “Acceptable” and “Poor” ratings for crash avoidance in the area of headlights (in standard and optional, respectively). It also only gave the child seat anchor LATCH system a “Marginal” rating for ease of use. The front crash prevention, vehicle-to-vehicle received a “Superior” rating.

National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Test Results

The NHTSA gives the 2020 Grand Cherokee an overall 5-Star Rating. That’s as good as it gets, but there are a few notes within that rating. The Overall Front Star Rating is only 4-stars due to the impact damage to the front driver side in tests. The Overall Side Star Rating is 5.

Another concern comes in the Rollover Star Rating. That’s just a 4 as well. The key here is that, while the vehicle did not tip over in the Dynamic tip testing, it did have a rollover risk of 16.9%, which is a bit high, especially for this vehicle’s class and competitor ratings.

2020 Jeep Grand Cherokee Available Safety Tech

Tech is everywhere. You may not spot all of those sensors on the mirrors and grille of your Jeep, but they’re there to respond to potential accident risks. That’s helpful to know when you’re on an adventure, like driving the kids to school.

Jeep does this in a suite of vehicle tech upgrades. The following are some of the key available features for the 2020 model.

Blind Spot Monitoring and Rear Cross Path Detection

A solid start is with Blind Spot Monitoring, which alerts you if there is a vehicle that is traveling next to you in your blind spot. It also offers Rear Cross Path Detection that warns you if there are vehicles driving behind you when you’re trying to get out of that parking spot.

Full-Speed Forward Collision Warning with Active Braking

Probably the best level of safety protection comes from the Full-Speed Forward Collision Warning. If you’re approaching another vehicle, object, or person, the car will alert you to the risk of a collision. It has a visual and audible chime.

If you don’t stop, the Active Braking goes into play – slowing and even applying the full brake force – in an effort to reduce the risk of the collision.

LaneSense Lane Departure Warning System

Whether you reached for something or dozed a bit, getting outside of your lane is a big reason why accidents happen, especially at high speeds. LaneSense aims to fix this by giving you an audible and visual warning if your car goes outside of the marked lands.

If you don’t correct this soon enough, the vehicle will apply some steering control to guide you back into the lanes.

Electronic Stability Control

Another key feature works using a network for sensors located throughout the exterior of the car. If you’re driving the vehicle and veering off the path, or otherwise driving less in control, the car recognizes this and aims to fix it.

It can correct any oversteering or understeering that occurs. This may help you to avoid collisions and stay in the proper lane on the roadway.

People Also Ask

Is a Jeep Grand Cherokee really a safe car?

As noted, there are some concerns with the IIHS rating and the rollover risk noted by NHTSA. Overall, it does have a strong safety tech setup. Compared to the 2019 model, the 2020 model has added more features and better safety across the board.

Is the Jeep Grand Cherokee a reliable car?

Reliability matters not just in avoiding costly repairs but also in safety (no one wants to breakdown on the side of the road). The good news is that there are few concerns about the Grand Cherokee’s overall reliability, and it does not seem to have too many significant problems.

Is it safer to buy a Jeep Cherokee or the Grand Cherokee?

The differences really come down to size. As a full-size SUV, the Grand Cherokee gives you more room and power. Larger vehicles also tend to be safer to drive (when they are well made), especially in cases of a collision or impact.

2020 jeep grand Cherokee limited.
I love my 2020 jeep grand Cherokee limited! The vehicle has a v6 engine. The leather seats are comfortable and the added features of heating and cooling driver and passenger seats is an extra bonus. There is also a heated steering wheel control. The car auto start/stop technology which helps to conserve gas. The drive is very smooth, more like a car than an SUV. The vehicle is equipped with an excellent navigation system, stereo system and Sirius/XM radio with a one year free membership. The back seats have plenty of legroom. The trunk is spacious and has a covering to pull over your items and you can also put the back seat down for extra storage space for any large items you may have. Overall I would highly recommend a jeep grand Cherokee.

Jeep has crafted an amazing vehicle! 2020 Grand Cherokee
This vehicle is a work of art! Jeep has truly outdone themselves! From the exterior it has a beautiful streamline figure, headlights and fog lights are exceptional. The easy accessibility to the trunk and one touch lock/unlock features. The vehicle has multiple ride heights allowing the vehicle to be at the optimal height for the speed. The park/exit is fantastic for us short people. The interior of beautiful soft rich leather, heated and cooled front seats with heated rear seats. The giant moon roof with one touch open close. There are so many features to be able to customize your vehicle to all of your safety and convenience wishes.

The 2020 jeep grand Cherokee is the perfect SUV for all seasons.
The 2020 jeep grand Cherokee is incredibly comfortable to drive, it is decent on gas as far as SUV's are concerned. The interior is beautifully designed, and the heating and cooling features are the best part. Automatic start allows the car to heat up on cold winter days, and cools things off in the summer. The part I dislike is the intuitive stopping if the car feels like you are going to back into something, it makes a terrible noise that is almost more stressful than bumping a curb. I do not know if I will ever get used to that feature. Otherwise, the car is extremely reliable and a ton of fun to drive!

Poor Performing Technology - 2020 Grand Cherokee
I bought one of the 2020 Grand Cherokee High Altitude to Replace a 2014 GC Limited because I wanted the newest Safety Features. After driving the vehicle for about 1.5 years and 16K miles, I believe I wasted my money on this one. The lane departure is extremely unreliable even after being re-calibrated twice by the dealership. It will hold lane position about 70 percent of time, then it will just wonder off and over the lines. Even when it is shows good lane knowledge. If you want a lane departure system that is reliable don't buy a Jeep.

2020 Jeep Grand Cherokee Trailhawk.
I will say that it is a little rough riding when hitting bumps and stuff. We are having to replace a tire already before the year is up. The middle back seat is not comfortable for long trips. The trunk is very spacious and the back seat folds down to make even more room. There are a lot of off-road features which we do not really use. The sunroof is nice. The front seats have heated feature and cooling feature which is nice. The keyless ignition start is great for hot days to cool down the car before you go to get in.

2020 Grand Cherokee drives great, but the electronic features could be better.
I love how my car looks visually. I like the way it drives. But the electronic features do not always work very well- things with my phone. For example, if start using the carplay feature to listen to a podcast or Pandora or something, then decide to start listening to the radio, it automatically flips back to the car play without me touching anything. Or if my phone is plugged in when I turn on the car, it sometimes does not register that it is plugged in. I have to unplug it from the USB, then plug it back in.

Has great safety and luxury features.
I have not experience any issues with my jeep grand Cherokee 2020 limited x, since I got it in November 2019. My favorite features of the car is the lane assist, front and back sensors that will break for you, and the uconnect ability, which easily pairs to my phone. The space within the car is a plus as well, especially if you have children or pets to bring along for the ride. All around, my favorite car that I have ever owned, and I plan to be a grand Cherokee owner for many years to come.

High quality and performance!
The jeep grand Cherokee has been very reliable. This is my third grand Cherokee. I do not believe there is another SUV on the market that comes close to the quality and features that the 2020 jeep grand Cherokee offers within that price point. From the touch screen controls, to the apple CarPlay, it is the quality leather seats. The design and performance of the 2020 jeep grand Cherokee are excellent for the price.

2020 Grand Cherokee has all the convenience you need in a vehicle with a push of a button.
This is the nicest vehicle I have purchased. It is very comfortable and has lots of features. I love the heated seats and steering wheel for those cold winter days. The automatic starter is very nice also. I thinks the automatic open and close door for the back is extremely convenient. Being able to lower or raise the vehicle in order to hook up the horse trailer definitely saves me lots of time and effort.

My 2020 jeep is my dream car and I am extremely happy with it.
I love my vehicle. I have owned two jeep grand Cherokees and they are extremely reliable. My last grand Cherokee was a 2009, and it lasted me over 120,000 miles. I love my new one and all the new features however, the older one had more features that jeep got rid of. For example, my old one had a back window that popped open and a way to set a seat position for driver one and two. My new one has neither.

The coolest new mom-mobile in Its class: 2020 Grand Cherokee
This vehicle has more features than I have ever had or know how to use so far. My favorite new features are the auto climate controls (heated steering wheel and seats) and the automatic trunk. It spacious and comfortable. It handles extremely well in all types of weather. The sound system is excellent. I have not encountered any problems, so far. Overall, the performance of this vehicle is excellent.

2020 Grand Cherokee is everything you want in a car and more.
Love the features it has to help see the cars in the front and in the back when parking the car and just in case it also has a feature in which the car breaks by itself to prevent crashes from happening. The car has apple play music so that no other phone holders are needed. The seats are soft and the ability of the car to tell what terrain it is going through is amazing since no other car.

2020 jeep grand Cherokee with leather interior.
Hard time connecting to Bluetooth (could be old phone). Love the touch screen features and the leather interior!! If you are looking for an upgrade, a grand Cherokee is the way to go! I feel very safe and love the comfort of my jeep! Love the key feature and being able to unlock the car with the key in my purse! Very helpful if you have very full hands. Love my new jeep!

Safety and tough look set this 2020 Grand Cherokee apart.
The jeep is amazing and the added driver assist features make driving worry free. The first time my jeep automatically applies the brakes I was a little freaked out but once I got use to it made me feel safe. The one downside is I didn't get the upgraded sound system which I regret. Jeeps' standard sound system just is not that great.

2020 Grand Cherokee does everything you want it to do.
Occasional issue at startup where the vehicle chugs a bit. Auto start/stop is annoying. Car cuts off when pulling into parking space. I disable this feature every time I start my car. Otherwise great car! Plenty of space. Plenty of passenger room. Great in the snow. Comfortable ride. Great looks. Easy to drive. Love the 4x4.

Love my 2020 jeep grand Cherokee!
My jeep grand Cherokee is comfortable, reliable, drives incredibly smoothly, and features things like apple car play, blind spot alerts, heated and vented seats, and a big sunroof. The back seat and trunk are spacious, and the driver and passenger seats are comfortable and adjustable. It also has great gas mileage.

Love it other than the connection with my phone.
The only complaint I have is the connection between my phone and vehicle. When connected through Bluetooth or by aux cord I cannot hear any video sound on my phone. And if I record a video there is no sound with it. Other than that I love all the features of the jeep grand Cherokee!

My 2020 trackhawk has zero problems. The performance is amazing, very easy to drive. The 2020 jeep grand Cherokee trackhawk is very reliable and comfortable. New added features for chairs, air/heat, radio and navigation. The trackhawk is fast and casual for all occasions.

The 2020 jeep cherokee that you didn't know you needed.
Love the jeep. It has a lot of feature to include eco mode, sport mode, snow mode, automatic starter, and so much more. The six months of Sirius XM was amazing and they even extended the service by three months for free. I would highly recommend joining the jeep family.

2020 Grand Cherokee. Great vehicle! Stunning looks and extra comfort.
Very comfortable, stylish and stands out in a crowd! Very reliable as well. The tech features make the ride more enjoyable and the leather seats are great for easy cleaning. Gas mileage would be my only complaint but with the size and comfort it is easy to overlook.

Not so bright headlights. Bought a new set to put in.
No problems. Just a couple of months old. Not sure if I truly love it yet. The only thing I do not like so far are the headlights. They are not bright enough. I bought led ones online and are going to have them put in. It rides nicely and had a lot of features.

2020 jeep grand Cherokee.
Best SUV we've leased. We had a 2018 same vehicle and just leased the same 2020 model. All the features are the same. The price was under 60k and you get all the bells and whistles. Come with a v8 hemi with lots of power. I highly recommend this vehicle.

2020 jeep limited x white.
Really smooth car. Very nice from the interior and outer car. Very good on gas and has many features too. Also has a very big trunk and is very spacious in the back. It is all 4 wheel drive which means it is great in the snow and off road experiences.
