Green 2020 Subaru Outback From Front-Driver Side

You’re thinking about buying a pre-owned Subaru. Perhaps it’s the Outback or the Impreza. You may be looking at features, space, and seating configurations. Yet, what’s most important to your family is how safe the vehicle is. Let’s consider the Subaru Outback and its safety rating.

How safe is the 2020 Subaru Outback?

The 2020 Subaru Outback received a 5-Star Overall Safety Rating from NHTSA and the highest possible score of “Good” from IIHS. Combined with a 4.59-Star Owner Rating and 4.61/10-Expert Review Rating from Vehicle History, you can have confidence in this car.

Investing in a pre-owned car means learning as much as you can about how safe that car is. We’ll help with that by breaking down test results and looking at some safety features here. You’ll be able to make the right decision for you after reading this.

2020 Subaru Outback Crash Test Results

One of the ways to measure Subaru safety is to take a closer look at the crash tests. These tests involve a lot of collision research on the vehicle. It provides authentic and transparent information on what could happen if an accident occurs. Here’s how the Outback did.

Insurance Institute for Highway Safety Test Results

The IIHS looks at a variety of factors to determine crashworthiness. This includes moderate and small overlap risks at the front, side impact, roof strength, and both head restraints and seats. In all of these areas, IIHS gave it a “Good” rating, the highest possible.

In crash avoidance and mitigation testing, IIHS gave the outback good ratings in most areas. However, some of the trim and optional headlights received only “Acceptable” and “Marginal” ratings. In areas of front crash prevention with other vehicles or pediatricians, this vehicle received “Superior” ratings.

National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Test Results

The NHTSA gives the 2020 Subaru Outback a full 5-Start Overall Safety Rating. That’s the highest it can. In frontal crash testing, the vehicle scored a full 5 stars on front driver and passenger collisions. In side crash ratings, the NHTSA also found solid performance with 5 stars.

In the Rollover Test, the Outback received just 4 stars. While this vehicle did not tip over during the dynamic tip test, it did have a high rollover risk. The NHTSA gave it an 18.5%, which is higher than others in its class.

2020 Subaru Outback Available Safety Tech

Safety is improving rapidly in many vehicles including in Subaru because of the use of technology. Sensors placed around the exterior of the car help the vehicle’s computer to make decisions to minimize risks and prevent accidents. Here’s what’s on many Subaru vehicles.

Subaru EyeSight

At the heart of all of Subaru vehicle’s driver assist and safety features is a suite of applications called Subaru EyeSight. The company notes it’s helped to reduce rear-end crashes with injuries by as much as 85% since its inclusion.

This driver assist technology provides a range of methods for improving overall safety, including these features.

Lane Keep Assist and Sway Warnings

With radar sensors on the vehicle, the system can monitor your position on the road in relation to lane markings. If you are swaying or moving outside of the lane, it will alert you with an audible warning. If you continue to do so, it can move you back in place.

Pre-Collision Throttle Management

One of the unique features of Subaru driver tech is this one. If there’s a crash likely, the vehicle will reduce the power going to the engine. The benefit here is that the possible impact force will be much less, reducing front impact damage considerably.

Pre-Collision Braking

The vehicle isn’t going to let you collide with another object if it can help it. To do that, it can apply some or the full force of the brakes if it detects a high risk of collision. EyeSight can, then, reduce the rate of pedestrian or other vehicle accidents considerably.

Adaptive Cruise Control

Car Adaptive Cruise Control

This feature works to help you to maintain a safe, pre-determined distance when operating cruise control. If the vehicle in front of you gets too close, the car automatically slows down as it works to prevent collisions. You can select the distance desired.

Here’s What Other People Also Ask About the 2020 Subaru Lineup

Safety questions are important, but there are other factors to think about before buying a Subaru. Here some questions others have asked.

Which Subaru vehicle is the safest?

This can be a very hard question to answer because there are numerous high-rated vehicles. The Impreza has consistently earned high marks for safety in both IIHS and consumer ratings. You may find other vehicles have a strong safety rating as well.

What types of problems do Subaru vehicles have?

Many Subaru vehicles have minimal problems. Differences existing in make, model, and year. Some noted concerns include problems with the head gaskets, front suspension, and powertrain deficiencies. Yet, overall, this vehicle lineup has fewer recalls than some competitors.

Which is better, the Subaru Forester or the Outback?

There are a lot of features to compare. The Forester is a solid vehicle with good performance and safety. The Outback is consistently rated highly by consumers and experts alike both for safety and for driving experience and performance. Compare models and trims carefully.

How long do Subaru vehicles last?

There is a lot of range here, including in models and various years. Most Subaru vehicles are built to last. These vehicles typically have lower maintenance needs. When well maintained and serviced, some owners report their cars lasting for 150,000 to 225,000 miles. Some may last even longer.

I recently purchased a 2020 Subaru Outback
We loved the safety features and they truly are amazing. We love the performance of our car and we can really feel it hugging the road. We've only encountered some issues that apparently a lot of other Subaru owners have too. For instance our speakers gave us a high pitched noise and then stopped working for the rest of our drive. The next day they worked perfectly as if nothing had ever happened. Additionally at night our headlights seem very bright to other drivers and we have been flashed by other drivers. This can become uncomfortable when driving at night and it is something to keep in mind when choosing a Subaru.

2020 Impreza is a comfortable and sleek drive, takes some adapting to new technology.
My only drawback is how sensitive the steering is, it is very responsive but to the point of just shifting your hands or weight can jerk the car and there's not a way that I have found to adjust the sensitivity. I also have the lane assist feature, which in theory is helpful. However, I do have it turned 'off' as there's a lot of construction going on near my work where the lanes are not always clear. Even in 'off' mode though, the car will still sometimes jerk a little to try to get you in the lane.

2020 subaru impreza, the car for every lifestyle.
The front cameras with crash detection makes you feel all the more safe. If the car detects a crash is about to happen it will stop your car immediately. When you connect your phone to the usb in the car a feature called carplay will pop up and it has all the information from your phone. This feature makes it incredibly easy to play music, send a text with your voice, call, and even ask siri the weather report. Subaru’s are reliable and safe for anyone.

2020 Outback takes a little getting used to.
I love the safety features like 'eyesight' and the starlink tool. I am having a bit of difficulty getting used to the stop engine feature that is new on the 2020 models and designed for fuel efficiency. It's not performing like a hybrid, but rather feels like a stall out every time it kicks in. I still love the tight turning radius and all wheel drive of the car, and it is interior styling.

I bought the 2020 outback.
I have had it since February and have needed the computer fixed 6 times ( it would have been more, but I need my car. It cannot be in the shop all the time). The screen won't turn on sometimes, sometimes it turns off in the middle of driving, sometimes parts of it will work and other functions won't. The fancy "eyesight" technology will also randomly turn off while driving.

2020 Outback is a great vehicle with great safety features.
Love all the safety features from the side view cameras to the blind spot alert. The back up camera/screen is very clear. I do not like that the screen is so large. The turbo engine is wonderful. You have to power and speed of the larger engine because of it. Although the vehicle is slightly smaller than my equinox, the 'trunk' area is larger.

2020 Outback is a safe car with great bonus features!
I love the handling, especially on local winter roads. I also love the features of the 2020 outback model- lane assist, Subaru eyesight features, etc. I feel safe and secure with this car. It automatically lowers high beams for oncoming cars at night, and has a remote car starter which is amazing to have in cold Vermont.

Safety of the 2020 Outback is very important to me and my passengers.
I like its performance, comfort, safety, and I like all the features. The car is great for driving long distance and camping, it has four wheel drive, and I like the room it has for a SUV. The car has bike ramp, and I can carry five people, and it is durable, and has a nice feel to it, for the radio and sound system.

Safe and comfort the 2 most important features for a car and the 2020 Outback has both.
My car feels safe and reliable to drive. I love the anti collision feature that makes me feel even more safe when driving with my family. Car is extremely comfortable to drive and has great trunk space. The drop down feature for the backseat is very convenient and easy to use. I get great mileage on my car.

2020 Impreza is safe and reliable.
The car has great features like drifting warnings, obstacle detection if a car in front of your stops, detection for obstacles when backing up, and it even alerts you if the car in front of you goes at a green light and you haven't moved yet. There is also a blind spot indicator on both side mirrors.

2020 Outback is a very nice looking car.
The outback is fantastic. There are many safety features, a good amount of space, nice sound system, equipped with starlink for roadside assistance anywhere. The backup camera is a good size. It has more features than a car needs and I do not know what half of them do but it is a smooth great ride.

2020 Subaru outback, great safety features. Very important.
2020 Subaru outback comes with all new safety features that I really love. Specifically there's a feature that alert when you take your eyes off the road, it tells you to keep your eyes back on the road and if you still do not it gives you a louder alert. Really helps distracted drivers.

2020 Subaru outback is the ultimate adventure-mobile.
It is comfortable and very enjoyable to drive. I enjoy the vision feature that lets me know if I am leaving my lane or am approaching an obstacle too quickly. I do wish the base model had heated seats and I have had unpleasant experiences getting it serviced at Subaru dealerships though.

2020 Outback is convenient.
There are very few problems. It drives smoothly and is comfortable. Many advanced features in terms of self driving (for example reminder to keep eyes on road). It is great for outdoorsy people and you can easily put on bike rack, trailer hitch, or racks on top for kayaks or canoes.

2020 outback having problems
I’m constantly having problems with the screen go off. Also the dash lights up off and on saying things like the eye sight is not working and basically every other alert like comes on like I’m not going to be able to brake or my car is going to die on the side of the road.

I love my all wheel drive Subaru Outback 2020.
To begin with my Subaru has no problems my Subaru is so safe to drive. It almost can drive itself. It has all the newest features for safety. Heads up display, auto braking, it has a lot of space for cargo and passengers. You can even put a tent on top which is made by Subaru.

The Subaru has outstanding safety features and is very reliable. The vehicle shuts off at lights to reduce emissions. It has large display panels. It is easy to drive and is very comfortable. It is extremely quiet. The eyesight feature keeps you safely in your lane.

Best visibility in my 2020 Subaru Impreza.
Best feature great visibility in vehicle. Love the hatchback for my horse items, grain, hay. Safety features, extra bars in doors for protection if an accident occurs. Small, compact and has great gas mileage. Price for lease was amazingly affordable.

2020 outback xt limited AWD.
Had to replace a module under warranty that made the vehicle draw too much power when shut off. We absolutely love the vehicle. Since it is the larger engine, power is fine for us. Every available safety feature which gives us a sense of security.

2020 Outback is a really good vehicle.
Like my car for its luxurious and safety features. The sporty look of the car is an attraction. The pearl white color was 2 of things I was particular about. I am impressed about the safety features. The auto brake was important.

Features in 2020 Outback make it feel safe
We really appreciate all the new safety features on the 2020 model; rear-backup, line change alert, eyes on road, etc. I also love the quality of the automatic hands free cell phone calls. My family is in love with this car.

I WAS a Subaru fan.
I bought two 2020 outbacks and am very disappointed. Both have computer issues, screen going blank, etc. Awful. One has the door trim falling off as well as a very underperforming AC.
