Most of the vehicles on the road today are reasonably safe as long as they’re properly maintained. In addition to preventative maintenance, checking your vehicle for open recalls and having repairs done promptly can go a long way toward keeping your vehicle safe on the road.

If you drive a 2003 Nissan Murano, you might be wondering, “Are there any recalls on the catalytic converter?”

As of August 2020, no recalls have been issued on this part. However, there have been numerous customer complaints online from owners who have run into issues with this vital component of the exhaust system.

In this article, we’ll cover some of these catalytic converter complaints in detail. From there, we’ll also take you through the steps required to check your own car for open recalls, so you can stay safer and more confident behind the wheel.

Catalytic Converter Failure

NHTSA Complaint ID: 10326998

On both the NHTSA website and on Vehicle History reviews, you can find complaints about the 2003 Murano’s catalytic converter. One formal complaint filed with the NHTSA in 2010 alleges that the catalytic converter on the vehicle failed and caused the “check engine” light to come on. This resulted in a $1,500 repair.

On a VehicleHistory.com review posted in February of 2010, the owner mentions catalytic converter failure as an issue he or she experienced.

False Catalytic Converter Warning Codes

Another Vehicle History review of the 2003 Nissan Murano reports that a software issue caused the vehicle’s on-board computer to send out diagnostic codes. These codes indicate that the catalytic converters have failed, even though an inspection and smog check revealed that the catalytic converters were working properly.

However, the owner maintains that these false warnings can make it difficult to get an emissions test completed in states in which the test is required.

How Should You Address a 2003 Nissan Murano Recall?

If you haven’t checked your 2003 Murano for open safety recalls lately, it only takes a few seconds. Visit the NHTSA recall page and enter your 17-digit VIN. Follow the prompts, and you’ll receive an instant list of all open recalls on your specific vehicle.

If you discover a recall on your Murano, contact Nissan customer service at 1-800-647-7261 for further instruction. A representative can assist you in locating a nearby Nissan service center so you can schedule your necessary repairs at no charge.
