The 2000 Ford Explorer came standard with A4.0L V6 engine but You could also upgrade to A5.0L V8. Both of these engine will have a motor oil capacity of 5 US quarts. The difference between these will be in oil type as the V6 will need to use 5W-30 while the V8 will need to use 5W-20. The oil drain plug will have a head size of 15mm and will require 20 lbs-ft of torque in order to remove it. You will need to change out the oil in these vehicles every 5,000 to 7,500 miles.

The three engine options for the 2000 Ford Explorer which are the 4.0L V6 SOHC, the 4.0L V6 (engine code X), and the 5.0L V8 all require 5 quarts of 5W30. However, Ford recently put out a service bulletin for the 5.0L V8 engine and now recommends using 5W20 synthetic oil for this particular engine option.
