Your 2001 Ford Mustang takeS6 quarts of synthetic SAE 5W20 motor oil. You will also need a Motorcraft FL-400S oil filter. Synthetic oil is by far better for performance. It protects the engine due to lower levels of friction. Switching between synthetic and conventional oils will not cause any damage to an engine. In fact, synthetic blends are a mixture of synthetic and conventional oil. Synthetic oil keeps engines cleaner. When oil travels through the engine, it picks up debris and deposits from tiny fragments of dirt and tiny slivers of metal which damage engines. Routine oil and filter changes help remove particles and sludge from the engine. If the oil isn't changed, Your vehicle's engine will start to have a lot of problems.

Both the 3.8L V6 engine option and the 4.6L V8 (engine code [X]) in the 2001 Ford Mustang require 5 quarts of 5W20 synthetic oil. The 32-valve 4.6L V8 (engine code [V]) engine option in the 2001 Mustang requires 6 quarts of 5W20 synthetic oil.
