The 2001 Toyota Tacoma oil type and capacity iS5w30 and 6 quarts. Having high quality oil is important for the engine to run smoothly. You will run into issues with the oil at some point. Bad oil can cause the engine to stop working. A common problem is an awful burning smell. This needs to be inspected as soon as possible or the car might explode. Knocking noise may arise from the engine. You could experience poor gas mileage. Your oil needs to be replaced eventually. Every 5,000 to 10,000 miles is a good rule of thumb. If You don't replace it, there will be issues with the engine.

The Toyota Tacoma's base engine, the 2.4L inline-4, needs 6 quarts of 5W30 or 10W30. The two versions of the 2.7L inline-4 (engine codes [M] 3RZ-FE M and 3RZ-FE 1) both require 6 quarts (RWD) or 5.8 quarts (4WD) of 5W30 or 10W30. Also, both versions of the 3.4L V6 (engine codes [N] 5VZ-FE N and 5VZ-FE 8) use 5.5 quarts of 5W30 or 10W30. All oils are synthetic based oil. Additionally, the 5W30 is for all temperatures and the 10W30 is for temperatures above 0 F.

My 2001 Tacoma 2WD with the 2RZ-FE engine has a differential capacity of only 1.4 quarts. I use Redline 75W-90 GL5 in the differential. If you are changing the fluid in a manual transmission use GL4, it's better for brass parts than GL5 even though the service says you can use GL5.
