The 2002 Subaru Forester 2.5 liter 4Cylinder engine is equipped with 4.2 US quarts of 5W-30 with a filter. Oil and filter changes should be scheduled every 7,500-10,000 miles or 12 months if using fully synthetic lubricants, or every 3,000-5,000 miles or 6 months, if filling with conventional oil. The advantages of using synthetic vs conventional products include better lubrication among moving parts, a longer interval between service appointments and enhanced effectiveness under adverse weather conditions. A motor oil with a thinner viscosity moves more easily in colder temperatures, coating engine components efficiently and providing better protection against friction and corrosion. Cost for a lube and filter job ranges between $130-$150 in materials and labor.

The only engine available the 2.5L box-4 in the 2002 Subaru Forester requires 4.2 quarts of 5W30 synthetic oil. However, for certain weather and usage conditions there are other recommended viscosities: for below 104 F use 5W30 for above -4 F use 10W30 or 10W40 and for above 95 F and heave duty operation use 30 weight, 40 weight, 10W50, 20W40, or 20W50.
