The 2004 Chevy Malibu has two different engine sizes and each one will require different oil capacity. The oil capacity for the 2.2L i-4 iS4.5 us quarts (4.3 liters) and the 3.5L v6 has A5 quarts (4.8 Liters). The manufacturer advises consumers to use licensed engine oils with the dexos1® approved certification mark. The proper oil type for the vehicle is an SAE 5w-30 full synthetic for the both engine options. Not changing the oil causes the oil to lose its viscosity and will not properly lubricate the internal parts of the engine such as the pistons and cylinders. The engine when running during extensive use will also burn the oil throughout so You will need to inspect the oil levels to make sure it is not burning up. Make sure if You are replacing oil that You also replace the oil filter as well.

The 2.2L inline-4 base engine for the 2004 Chevrolet Malibu requires 5 quarts of 5W30 synthetic oil. The 2004 Malibu's optional 3.5L V6 engine needs 4 quarts of 5W30.
