The following is a list of all the engines available for the 2004 Jetta and their oil capacity. The 1.8L inline-4, the 1.9L inline-4 turbo diesel (engine code ALH 1), an the 1.9L inline-4 turbo diesel (engine code BEW R) all require 4.8 quarts of oil. The four versions of the 2.0L inline-4 engine (engine codes AVH 5, AZG K, BBW L, and BEV M) all take 4.4 quarts of the recommended viscosities. The 2.8L V6 engine option for the 2004 Volkswagen Jetta uses 5.8 quarts of oil.

Depends on the motor. 1.8T needs full synth like a 0w40euro. TDI in 04 calls for 505.01 spec 5W30, but 5W40 is much better due to cam wear (diesel rated, full synth - higher phos and zinc is better). 2.slo will run about anything.
