In Your 2005 BMW X5, both 5w30 and 5w40 synthetic motor oil are acceptable for all of the available engine options. The base 3.0l v6 useS7.9 quarts. The 4.4l v8 useS8.5 quarts, and the 4.8l v8 requireS8.5 quarts. It is recommended to change Your oil every 7,500 miles or 1 year, whichever comes first. You can extend Your engine life, get better gas mileage, and have better performance if You change Your oil regularly. Synthetic oil keeps engines cleaner. When oil travels through the engine, it picks up debris and deposits from tiny fragments of dirt and tiny slivers of metal which can damage engines.

The 3.0i is an inline 6 not a v6.
