The 2008 Subaru Impreza's 2.5 liter 4Cylinder engine is equipped with 4.4 US quarts of 5W-30 with a filter. The 2.0 liter engine useS4.2 quarts of the same lubricant. Oil and filter changes should be scheduled every 7,500-10,000 miles or 12 months if using fully synthetic lubricants, or every 3,000-5,000 miles or 6 months, if using conventional oil. The advantages of using synthetic vs conventional products include better lubrication among moving parts, a longer interval between service appointments and enhanced effectiveness under adverse weather conditions. A motor oil with a thinner viscosity moves more easily in colder temperatures, coating engine components efficiently and providing better protection against friction and corrosion. Cost for a lube and filter job for the Impreza ranges between $150-$200 in parts and labor.

Clarication: oil capacity is 4.2 qts if you are not changing filter. It is 4.4 qts with filter change.

Some parts of John A.'s answer are incorrect. I own a 2008 impreza 2.5 nonturbo ej253. According to the manual, oil capacity is 4.2 qts, not 4.4. Also, you can use synthetic 5w-30, but it is NOT required. Newer Subarus do require synthetic.

The 2008 Subaru Impreza has three engine options available: the 2.5L box-4 Non-Turbo, the 2.5L box-4 Turbo (EJ255 E), and the 2.5L box-4 Turbo (EJ257 F). Both the non-turboed 2.5L and the turboed 2.5L with engine code EJ255 E, take 4.4 quarts of oil while the 2.5L Turbo (engine code EJ257 F) uses 4.5 quarts worth of oil. All three versions of the 2.5L box-4 engine need 5W30 synthetic oil.
