The 2008 Toyota 4Runner uses SAE 5W-30 motor oil and takeS5.5 quarts with the 4.0L V6 engine. If You have the 4.7L V8 engine then You will need 6 quarts. Toyota also recommends using full synthetic oil when You need to change it in Your SUV. There are two main types of oil, conventional and synthetic. Conventional is made from petroleum and is what has been used in cars since they were first made. Synthetic is engineered in a lab and is newer and designed to give You greater protection. Synthetic oil needs to be changed every 7,500 miles compared to conventional which is every 3,500 to 5,000 miles. Always be sure to check Your oil monthly to make sure that it is full and in good condition.

The 2008 Toyota 4Runner's two engine options require 5W30 synthetic based oil. The 4.0L V6 base engine uses 5.5 quarts, while the 4.7L optional engine needs 6 quarts worth.
