The 2012 Subaru Outback useS4.4 quarts of oil for the 2.5L non turbo engine, 4.5 quarts for the turbo 2.5L engine, and 6.9 quarts for the 3.6L V6 engine. All of these use the same SAE 5W-30 oil, and Subaru recommends that You use synthetic oil whenever You need to change it. Oil comes in two major varieties, synthetic and conventional. Synthetic oil gives You better protection and a longer life than the standard petroleum based conventional. This means that You can usually go 7,500 miles between oil changes compared to 3,500 to 5,000. You should make an effort to check Your oil at least once a month to make sure that it is free from debris.

The preferred oil type for the 2012 Subaru Outback is 5W-30. If 5W-30 conventional oil is not available, 5W-30 synthetic oil may be used for optimum engine performance. All turbo models require 5W-30 synthetic oil, however conventional may be used. The oil capacity for the 2012 Subaru Outback 2.5 L non-turbo models requires 4.4 US quarts (4.2 liters) the 2.5 L turbo models require 4.5 US quarts (4.3 liters) and the 3.6 L models requires 6.9 US quarts (6.5 liters).
