The 2012 Ford Focus 1.6L uses a timing chain and not a timing belt. This is the case, as most modern cars have moved in the direction of chains, and away from belts. The belts were typically made of mostly rubber, which wear prone to damage from normal wear and tear. This made them somewhat inefficient for the job. With chains being a lot more durable, it saves the car owner the need to have a belt replaced. Chains do not need the kind of maintenance belts required. Cars with belts typically need a replacement 2 to 4 times over the life of the car. Chains on the other hand may not need a replacement at all, or one at most. For this reason, it is becoming the standard.
