Like most modern cars, the 2012 Subaru Impreza uses a timing chain and not a timing belt. The industry shift from belts to chains is a sensible one, as chains are a lot more durable than belts made of mostly rubber. Rubber does not do very well for long term active use, so timing belts have been known to break. This damage is usually caused by regular wear and tear of the belt. Chains do not have this problem, as they are made from much more durable materials. So most car owners will never have to worry about replacing a timing chain, although it is not impossible that it will require one. As long as the car's engine is maintained with regular oil changes, the chain should be fine.
