The Toyota Matrix does not have a timing belt, it uses a chain to control the timing of the engine. The chain connects the crankshaft to the camshaft and synC-HRonizes the position of the piston with the opening or closing of the intake and exhaust valves. As the crankshaft turns the connecting rods go up and down. The Pistons are at the top of the connecting rod and their job is to compress the air in fuel mixture before the spark plug ignites forcing the piston back down into the cylinder. The gas is injected into the cylinder when the intake valve opens and once the fuel is burned, the exhaust valve opens allowing the gas to exit the engine. If the timing is off, the valve could open at the wrong time causing the piston to crash into it destroying the engine.
