The 2002 Chevrolet Cavalier comes equipped with a timing chain rather than a timing belt. The vehicle has actually used the timing chain since the year 1988 in all versions. One big reasons why vehicles might use a chain instead of a belt is because the chain should last for the life of the vehicle unlike the belt which needs to be replaced every now and then. There is not much difference between the timing chain and the belt other than the location and the material they are made with. The belt is on the outside of the engine and is exposed to things causing it to wear down and the chain is on the inside of the engine and isn't exposed to as much wear. If a vehicle uses a belt, they should be changed every 60,000 to 90,000 miles or so and You should only have to inspect the chain every 150,000 miles or so.
