The 2000 Dodge Caravan uses both the timing chain and the timing belt depending on the size of the engine. Both of the 2.4 L 4Cylinder and the 3.0 L V6 use a timing belt and the 3.3 L V6 engine uses a timing chain. There is not much difference between the two except for where they are located, the material they are made with and the service required on them. The timing belt is located on the outside of the engine and is exposed to things that causes wear and tear. The timing chain is on the inside of the engine and isn't exposed to much. Because of this the belt needs to be replaced every 60,000 to 100,000 miles or so and You only need to inspect the chain every 150,000 miles or so.
