The 2000 Ford Ranger with the 3.0L engine comes standard with a timing chain on the engine. This is better than a belt in my opinion because it should not need to be changed during the life of the vehicle. The timing chain keeps Your cams and crankshaft in sync with each other and that keeps Your vehicle running in time. A chain should be able to last over 300,000 miles but it is still a good idea to check it once a year. During this check You should make sure that it is not loose because that can indicate a problem with the tensioner that will need to be replaced to get it working right again.
