If You've got a 2000 Toyota RAV4 with A4Cylinder engine then You're going to have a timing belt rather than a timing chain. Unlike the timing chains, the belts aren't as durable and will need to be replaced at certain intervals and You should check Your owners manual to confirm when that should be. Typically it is every 80,000 miles or so but You should inspect it on Your own well before that. All You really need to do is locate the belt and examine it for any spots that look a bit worn out or aren't as solid as they should be. Once the belt breaks You'll no longer be able to start Your engine so You want to catch any problem early on. -

It has a timing belt. If you are changing the timing belt, you might as well change the crankshaft seal, camshaft seal, oil pump seal and gasket and the water pump.
