The 2000 VW Jetta comes standard with a timing chain on the VR-6 engine. This is better than a belt because it will not need to be replaced during the life of the vehicle. Usually a timing belt will need to be changed out every 60,000 to 100,000 miles and a chain should be able to last 300,000 miles. It is still a good idea to check Your chain at least once a year. If You notice that it is loose that can be a sign of a problem with the tensioner. Your timing chain is used to keep the timing correct and in sync on the engine and if it were to skip or be loose that could cause damage to the engine.
