The 2001 BMW 330i has a timing chain and not a belt. This is true for most cars today, as the timing chain is a much better option. Chains are made of metal, so they are a lot more durable than the belts made of mostly rubber. Rubber is a lot more prone to degradation from wear and tear, so it has to be changed occasionally. Timing chains are capable of lasting for the entire lifespan of the car. In some cases, a car owner might have to have it changed once. For this reason, it makes a lot of sense that car makers have ditched the previously used belts in favor of chains. Maintenance of Your engine with regular oil changes will also cover the maintenance of the chain, as it is part of that block.
