The engines that are available in the 2001 Dodge Dakota are equipped with a timing chain rather than a belt. Both of those parts have their pros and cons but the chain is the better one for manufacturers to use in my opinion so You're lucky to have it. A belt may be cheaper to replace and run a bit quieter than a chain will but it's a guarantee that it will wear down over time and You'll need to replace it. The chain however is much more durable and shouldn't require any direct maintenance on Your part for the lifetime of the vehicle. As long as it stays well lubricated by Your engine oil it shouldn't give You any problems. -
