The 2001 Mazda Protege was available in two engine options. The standard option was a 1.6L 4Cylinder and the upgraded models would have a 2.0L 4Cylinder. These engines both will use a timing belt system. These belts are expected to last up to 105,000 miles but it's more likely You'll need to have it changed out around the 75,000 to 90,000 mark. A full new timing belt kit will cost between $130 and $200. If You want to take it in to a mechanic to have them change it out You'll be looking at spending between $500 and $900 for the total costs of parts and labor.
