The 2001 Toyota Tacoma does have abs. Brake equipment will become old and will need to be replaced at some point. The brake pads and shoes need replacing every 50,000 miles. The brake rotors need to be changed every 60,000 miles. The brake fluid needs to be changed every 20,000 to 45,000 miles. Your brakes need to be in the beSTShape. Having faulty brakes will lead into difficulties. Screeching sounds can arise from not enough brake fluid. A loose bearing can make for poor stops. The brakes can lock up, which will result in crashes. Bad brake pads will result in problems with the vehicle coming to a halt. Premature brake wear is an issues that needs to be addressed.

My 2001 Tacoma has ABS, it was about a $600 option that year and became standard on later years.

The 2001 Toyota Tacoma anti-lock brake system (ABS) is optional on all models. The anti-lock brake system is designed to help prevent lock-up of the wheels during a sudden braking or braking on slippery road surfaces. This assists in providing directional stability and steering performance of the vehicle under these circumstances.
