As the owner of a 2002 Ford Explorer, You may be discovering some issues with the air conditioning, particularly in the rear or back seats of the vehicle. There have been multiple reports of the ac no longer working for passengers sitting in the rear. This is almost always caused by a faulty temperature blend door actuator. Symptoms can include a loud knocking sound from behind the dashboard, or the blend door flapping to and fro for no reason. If the actuator is faulty, it will need to be replaced. You can expect to pay between $40 and $149 for new parts alone. If it is replaced by a mechanic, You will need to pay $50 to $140 for labor.

The 2002 ford explorer rear ac/heat blower has been reported to be malfunctioning by making a loud knocking noise even when turned off. Try getting the rear temperature blend door actuator replaced which often solves the problem.
