The standard 2.4-liter engine in the 2002 Honda CR-V uses a timing chain. Unlike a belt, which is made of rubber and requires replacing, a chain is designed to last the life of the vehicle. However, there are exceptions. Replacing one is costly, but it's always better to have a new one installed before an old one breaks, as it can do very expensive damage to the engine. It's generally going to coSTSomewhere between $520 and $780 and labor makes up a vast majority of that amount. This is very labor-heavy service work. The timing chain is made of metal links. These links interact with camshaft and crankshaft sprockets to synC-HRonize the opening and closing of intake and exhaust valves every time the engine fires. One of most common symptoms of a failing chain that might need replacing is rattling in the engine. Fragments break off the chain from friction and bounce around in the oil drain pan when the vehicle is in motion.
