The 2003 Chevy Silverado has the transponder chip located in the key fob that locks and unlocks the truck, not in the actual head of the key itself. If You need to replace Your key it should be pretty easy to do since all You need is a key that is the right length cut to match the OEM key. Most vehicles use some sort of a transponder, either in the fob or in the key itself to communicate with the receiver in the vehicle. This allows the system to disarm and start the vehicle. If You are having problems with Your vehicle starting check the battery in the transponder to make sure that it is working properly.

No, and this means getting a replacement key is much easier. That said, it also makes stealing the vehicle easier.
