The 2003 Nissan Frontier comes standard with a timing belt that is used on the V6 engine, and a timing chain on the 4Cylinder. In my opinion a timing chain is a better option than a belt because they do not break. The timing belt service is usually the most expensive service that You will have to do on Your vehicle, and it will need to be changed every 60,000 to 100,000 miles. A chain should be able to last You over 300,000 miles between changes. Even if You have a timing chain You should still check it at least once a year to make sure it is not loose and it is free from debris or signs of uneven wear.
