Both the 4.0 L V6 and 4.6 L V8 engine options for the 2005 Ford Explorer come with a timing chain. While timing belts are a bit cheaper to manufacture and repair the timing chain has the benefit of being much stronger and lasting significantly longer under the right conditions. Your chain stays lubricated by the engine oil so it's important to follow Your vehicles recommended oil change schedule. Using a premium full synthetic oil as well as a premium filter is also recommended for keeping the chain running well for extended periods of time. Mechanical issues can always happen no matter how careful You are but this basic care goes a long way in preventing wear to the chain. -
