No, the 2008 Ford Escape doesn't have a conventional power steering pump, but rather utilize a power steering control module (PSCM). This was a change that actually began with the model year 2008 vehicles. The PSCM works with an electric motor, torque sensor and other angle sensors to steer. Problems with thiS-TYPE of system can manifest as the steering wheel turning by itself, or losing power steering assist when making turns. As the circuit for this is protected by a fuse, if You find there is no steering assist at all, that's going to be the first place to look. Otherwise, the PSCM tends to be as reliable or more so than using a power steering pump.
