The 2008 Volvo XC70 comes equipped with a timing chain instead of a timing belt. There isn't much difference between the two except for where they are located and the material they are made with. The timing belt is located on the outside of the engine and the chain is on the inside of the engine. Since the belt is on the outside, it goes through wear and tear and the chain is on the inside of the engine so it doesn't go through as much wear. If a vehicle uses a timing belt, it needs to be changed every so often. The timing chain is usually meant to last for the life of the vehicle. You should just inspect the chain every 150,000 miles or so in-case something did go wrong with it.
