The 2009 Hyundai Sonata comes with a timing chain on the engine. The timing chain is an improvement over a timing belt since it will never need to be replaced. A timing belt service is one of the most expensive pieces of routine maintenance that You will have to do, and they need to be replaced every 60,000 to 100,000 miles. A timing chain on the other hand should be good for over 300,000 miles. I recommend that You still change Your water pump every 60,000 to 100,000 miles. You should also do an annual inspection on Your chain to make sure that it is not loose and free from any damage that could cause it to break.

Both engine options in the 2009 Hyundai Sonata both use a timing chain.
