When equipped with the 2.4-liter engine, the 2009 Mitsubishi Outlander features a timing chain. Vehicles powered by a 3.0-liter engine use a timing belt. These parts are simply made of different material, but do the same thing. The timing belt is made of rubber and features teeth on one side. The chain is comprised of metal links. Both interact with the camshaft and crankshaft sprockets to control the intake and exhaust valves. If one breaks, expensive engine damage can be resulted. Mitsubishi recommends replacing the belt every 60,000 to 90,000 miles. The average cost for this repair work is $570 to $670. A timing chain is designed to last the life of the vehicle and shouldn't need replacing, but there are definitely exceptions. Replacing one will run between $720 and $870. Labor makes up about $630 to $780 of that total.
