The 2009 Toyota Prius comes equipped with a timing chain rather than a timing belt. Actually all the Prius models and all years use the timing chain. It is actually better to use the chain because it is meant to last for the life of the vehicle unlike the belt. The reason why the timing belt doesn't last for the life of the vehicle is because it is exposed with it being on the outside of the engine and the chain is on the inside and isn't exposed. For vehicles with timing belts they should be replaced every 60,000 to 100,000 miles. For vehicles with timing chains You should just inspect it after a while, maybe like every 150,000 miles or so.
