If Your 2009 Volkswagen Routan has a 3.8 L V6 engine then You will have a timing chain but if You've got the 4.0 L V6 then You will have a timing belt. If You've got the engine with a chain then You likely won't have to worry much about replacing it over the course of Your ownership. If You've got a timing belt then it's likely it will need to be replaced at some point. Over time all belts will wear down and need to be changed because they're just made of rubber. This particular combination of belt and V6 engine are known to last for quite a while and You may get 100,000 miles or more before it wears down. -
