The 2010 Toyota Highlander comes with a timing chain on the 4Cylinder and 6 cylinder models, however the 2010 hybrid comes with a timing belt. A timing chain is a better option than a belt because they do not wear out. Usually the timing belt service is the most expensive piece of regular maintenance that You will need to do on Your SUV, and with a chain You won't have to. A timing belt needs to be changed every 60,000 to 100,000 miles, while a chain is good for over 300,000 miles. Even though You do not need to replace it You should still inspect Your timing chain at least once a year to make sure it is not loose or damaged.

For the 2010 Toyota Highlander, the Hybrid is the only model that uses a timing belt. Both the 4-cylinder and optional V6 engines of the Highlander use a timing chain for 2010. A chain often requires less maintenance and could last the lifetime of the vehicle without needing changed. A belt has regular intervals for changing it.
