Like most modern car manufacturers, Nissan began phasing out the timing belt in the 21st century. For instance, the 2012 Nissan Xterra has a timing chain. Beginning in 2005, Nissan started installing the chain in all versions of the Xterra that were produced. Before 2005, what drove the engine varied with cylinder size. The stronger, more durable chain is preferred because it is meant to last the life of the engine. This means the owner won't have the spring for a costly repair due to the degradation of the materials that composes the flimsy belts. If You are unfortunate enough to have a broken chain, You can expect to spend upwards of $1,000 to have it repaired. Thankfully, this is not a common problem with Xterras of any year.
