The 2012 Volvo XC90 comes with a timing chain on the engine. The timing chain is an improvement and better than a standard belt because it does not need to be changed. On average You will need to change a timing belt every 60,000 to 100,000 miles and this is the most expensive regular service You will need to do. The chain on the other hand is usually good for over 300,000 miles. I still recommend checking Your chain at least once a year to make sure that it is not loose or damaged and free from debris. You will also still want to change Your water pump that is driven by the chain as well at least every 100,000 miles.
