For the 2013 Kia Soul all of the years and all of the engines use a timing chain except for the 2009 to 2014 with the 2.0L Beta II engine which uses a timing belt. The timing chain usually doesn't need to be replaced, unlike the timing belt. The reason why it doesn't need to be replaced is because the chain is inside the engine and the belt is outside the engine and is exposed. The belt also gets help with engine oil to help lubricate it. Sometimes the chain will need to be replaced because of total failure with it. If it ever does need to be replaced, the cost of a new one is anywhere from $70 to $130 just for the parts.
