The 2014 AudiA4 has a timing chain inplace of a timing belt. AudiMost likely chose to use a chain over a belt because it will last much much longer and is far less likely to fail unexpectedly. Some of the other reasons to use a chain over a belt are; a belt tends to stretch after a certain amount of time which can cause small changes in the timing that can be hard to predict. Then You have to consider the fact that rubber does not play well with oil, gas and other automotive chemicals, which can lead to a failure even sooner than expected. Another factor that could have played a roll in Audis decision is that the A4 has an interference style engine, which means if the timing belt/chain breaks while the engine is running, You will destroy the engine.
