The 2016 Hyundai Sonata has a timing chain, rather than a timing belt. This has a few benefits. First, with the use of a timing belt, You can expect regular wear and tear. Belts need to be checked, and possibly replaced, every 6 months or 5,000 miles, whichever comes first. Timing chains, in contrast, are expected to last for the lifetime of Your vehicle. This means that You will likely be covered for any damage for up to 10 years, or 100,000 miles. A sign that something is wrong with Your chain is the presence of a ticking noise that seems to be coming from the engine bay. It will cost between $120 and $148 for a new chain alone.

The 2016 Hyundai Sonata has a timing chain, not a timing belt. The chain is more durable, but can still wear and stretch. If you hear a ticking noise in your engine, have your timing chain checked.

A chain, thankfully. Belt-driven valve timing belts hopefully are passé. Pass on a car that still uses one. Stupid expensive to replace!
