All versions of the 2016 Kia Rio use a timing chain rather than a timing belt. The Rio did used to use a timing belt but it was only for the 2000 througH2005 models and the 1.4 L I4 and 1.6 L Alpha II engines on the 2005 to 2011 models. They have been using a timing chain on all other engines for the Rio since then. Since they use a timing chain rather than a belt, it does not need to be replaced every so often unless there is complete failure with it. With the belt You usually change it every 60,000 miles to 100,000 miles or so. The reason why the chain usually doesn't need changed is because it is stored in the engine and isn't exposed like the belt.
