The 2017 Ford Fusion's "rotary shifter" is activated by a small dial in the cabin that uses sensors to detect when a driver has exited to automatically return the car to "park". The technology is intended to prevent roll-overs and fatalities. However, owners report the rotary shifter malfunctions when they attempt to reverse or move to drive after reversing. The device moves into park after selecting reverse and will not allow the driver to back out. Alternatively, the rotary function will keep a car in park that successfully reverses, preventing driving forward. The system operates through three electronic modules and/or door sensors that could be faulty. Have these systems checked out by a professional.

I had to have mine replaced after 2 years of having the vehicle. The cost was close to 500 bucks.

I’m getting mine replaced today for the same issue. I’m going to keep my receipt and file a complaint for a recall. The 2013 to 2016 had similar issues and got a recall.

Has anyone else experienced the battery dying overnight after manually placing car in park the day before; rather than letting the rotary shifter do so automatically?

I just bought my 2017, having an issue where the rotary shifter is flashing red on park and won’t shift to a different gear. It works, but is unresponsive to switching gears.
