The Ford Ranger 3.2L engine has a timing chain that is on the engine to control the timing gears. This is an improvement over a timing belt. In general You will need to replace a timing belt every 60,000 to 100,000 miles and You can usually go over 300,000 miles on a timing chain. I do still recommend that You inspect the chain at least once a year to make sure that it is not loose or damaged. You will also want to make sure to change Your water pump every 100,000 miles, and that is under the timing cover as well. That is important because it keeps the coolant circulating to keep Your engine from overheating.
