There have been some complaints with the ECM in the Ford Ranger. A bad ECM can cause the Check Engine light to illuminate, reduced engine performance and the engine can mIS Fire, stall or not start at all. To self-diagnose the ECM as to whether or not it is the issue in the Ranger, a visual inspection can be done as a process of elimination. When doing a visual inspection, start out by inspecting the connector pins You want to make sure they're all upright an intact and corrosion free. Next is a smell test, a simple whiff by the plug of the unit will let You know whether the unit is alright, getting distinct odor of burnt plastic lets You know that its probably bad and at that point You want to further inspect the board by opening up the unit. When opening up the unit You want to visually inspect for any burnt components or corrosion if either one of the two are found the ECM needs to be replaced.

If your ford ranger ecm begins to fail you will notice the car misfiring along with the check engine light flashing. Other symptoms include non-start, bad fuel economy and engine performance issues.
