The Mazda CX3 uses a timing chain rather than a timing belt. Since it uses the chain it will have a quicker response to throttle input than a standard all wheel drive. The chain doesn't need as much maintenance as the belt, the belt eventually needs replaced and the chain is usually meant to last for the life of the vehicle. The reason why timing belts need to be changed is because it is on the outside of the engine and is exposed whereas the chain is in the engine and isn't exposed. For vehicles that use a timing belt, You should get them replaced every 60,000 to 100,000 miles and You only need to inspect the chain every 150,000 miles or so. When You inspect the chain You only need to look at the tension and the sprockets.

Your Mazda CX5 should come equipped with a maintenance free timing chain that does not need replacement.
