The Volvo V50 comes equipped with a timing belt instead of a timing chain. A belt is less durable than a chain and should be replaced every 60,000-100,000 miles. Volvo recommends every 120,000 miles for the V50. Also because a belt operates from outside rather than inside the engine, it can suffer from cracking or drying out and eventually fail. A timing chain, by contraSTShould remain maintenance free, although occasionally they break or tensioners stretch, which can have catastrophic results for the engine. When belts begin to need replacement You will experience clicking and ticking noises from the engine, mIS Fires, rough idling and no-starts. The cost to replace on the V50 averages $600-$700 in parts and labor.

My volvo V50 doesn't have a timing belt, I was told my car was fitted with a chain cause its the 1.8 ltr, flexifuel 4 cylinder naturally aspirated petrol engine.

Most Volvo V50's are equipped with timing belts, depending on year and engine type.
