Changing the alternator in a 2001 Ford Escape a pretty easy thing to do. You will need to get sockets and wrenches to be able to remove it. It is also useful to have a tensioner tool. The first thing that You should do is remove the belt from the alternator pulley. In order to do that You will need to loosen the tensioner and then the belt can slip off the pulley. Next You should disconnect the battery cables to prevent anything from shorting out. Once the battery is disconnected remove the cables that are on the alternator including the wires to the voltage regulator. Now You can remove the three bolts that hold it in place on the mounting bracket and take it out of the car.

Open the hood of the vehicle. Locate the alternator. Remove the alternator carefully. Replace it with the new alternator. Make sure the belts fit snuggly. Close the hood and test the vehicle.
